**Compromise vs. Violence**
The negotiation process in South Africa
- 1990 to 1994
- negotiations between ANC and NP were not easy
- Problems to overcome:
Organisational Had been banned since 1960, needed to transform
Structure from liberation party to a political party
Township Youth and comrades had their own expectations
Radicals
MK Cadres Wanted rewards for their ‘struggle’
White Liberals Wanted change but feared for their own security
and
Moderates
Conservative Army, police, Targetted political AWB invade
Right Wing security party offices and Bophuthatswana,
afrikaners forces, AWB ovting venues invasion fails
and CP all did -40 bombs in 1st four when soldiers
not want any months of 1994 fire at them,
change -car bomb at they retreat, 3
Johannesburg members of
International Airport AWB were killed
on day of election infront of
-still particiipated ni television
election, no vote cameras
meant a vote for the
opposititon
Zulu Led by Buthelezi and the IFP, wanted self-
Nationalists determination for Zulu’s in KZN
National Party -was in alliance with IFP against ANC
-wanted power sharing not majority rule
Violence ANC: Natal and Vaal townships Shell House
between ANC IFP: Zulu Refuse to take part in Massacre:
and IFP migrant election, want -28 March 1994
supporters workers autonomous
