CHILD LABOUR
No prizes for guessing which one of the Crossroads Assessment questions we have chosen to explore here:
“60% of the world’s cobalt is mined in the DRC. Significant amounts of this is mined under appalling conditions
often by child labourers.” My personal opinion on this statement is most closely described by:
a. What’s cobalt got to do with to me?
b. The DRC is a long way from where I live so I don’t really care.
c. This is just a fact of global supply chains and necessary for global economic growth, which is in everyone’s best
interest.
d. I wonder who is profiting out of this?
e. It breaks my heart to see children exploited. This is morally wrong and must not be allowed.

Step 1: Set the scene
To set the scene for this assessment, we want you to do a Google image search using the words "DRC cobalt mines
child labour ".
You should see something like the image below. Take a bit of time and scan through the images.

Step 2: Answer the following questions - COUNTS 60% OF MARKS
1. 1. Which is the most likely utilitarian option in the multiple choice question above?
2. Why do you say this? You MUST state your premises for concluding this explicitly as we taught you in the
section A DARN GOOD ARGUMENT. If you do not do this, you will fail this part of the assignment.;
3. What do you feel about this option?;
4. Which option did you chose?

lot. There is a lot of recommendations I post in order to steer you to the right direction.
There are students who are continue to make the same mistakes that I corrected them in the first assignment, just
because they do not read my comments.

Thank you for raising this.
You can respond to any posting that is in the discussion forum, as long as you do not forget the Rules of
engagement. E.g. responding to Merriam's comment on Juan's posting as you suggested. You can make it a
string of comments.
Remember that the essence of the discussion forum is learning from one another, so when you guys
engage thoughtfully, the purpose is achieved. (and more marks are obtained)
But all in all, you guys have been nailing it, so no worries.
And please do not disappoint me by submitting copied assignments, I have been enjoying most of your
postings so far.

Upsetting, isn't it?
It is upsetting to see such images of child labours in DRC. One can see from the images that no safety
regulations is adhered to. The children work in condition that are harmful to their own health. You can also see
no PPE is provided at all. Living in a country where we have rights and kids have right also. One tender to wonder
what went wrong at DRC to allow such practices.

The beneficiaries of cobalt are the culprits in these whole situations one can see that none of the beneficiaries
care enough to see or understand how the cobalt is found and the measures thereof taken to get this resource.
They care about the product which is to get the cobalt to manufacture their product. The big tech companies are
the beneficiaries. Here we see that profits are more important that human life.
The small-scale miners are playing a big role in allowing such practices to continue by forcing young kids to be
labourers of cobalt. Living conditions and political instability caused by rebels regarding the fight for natural
resources that the country has forced such practices to continue to prevail.
Step 3:
Cobalt is a natural resource and Democratic republic of Congo has 70% of this resource. Cobalt is used to
manufacture lithium batteries which are used in electric vehicles in first world countries. The manufacturing of
electric vehicles has shown significant growth and unfortunately the child labour problem that we see in DRC will
continue to rise and the cobalt is now in high demand. My concern is kids are supposed to be given a chance to
grow under safe environment and they have a right to education. In these condition that they find themselves in
they are forced to be act and think like adults at a very tender age. Harsh living conditions and wars that continue
to happen while the world is watching and is silent. Cobalt mining is also harmful to the environment as it has
high carbon dioxide and Nitrogen oxide. In the long run the country’s emission will be high and it will not be a
safe environment for human beings.
None of the beneficiaries wants to invest in small scale mining within DRC and this gets to show that the world is
