How can social psychology be used to explain heroism?

a heroic act is brave, an act of kindness, someone places themselves at
risk for another

Heroic Imagination Project by Zimbardo states heroism has 4 key
elements; voluntary, done to help people or community in need, involves
some type of risk, done without any need for compensation

his foundation teaches individuals how to resist social forces that influence
our behaviour negatively & to refocus our behaviour into positive social
action

suggests that being a hero isn't a unique quality but behaviour that anyone
can display

universal human tendencies are automatic & can be useful but in
challenging situations, we over-rely on them and make poor decisions

define heroism:
Voluntary behaviour that involves a risk that will not result in a reward.
An ordinary person doing extra-ordinary actions.

what is the aim of the heroic imagination project?
To teach people to resist social forces that influences their behaviour.

what are the universal human tendencies?
1) the tendency to reach out for things that we’re not paying attention to which
can lead us to react dangerously and not consider other choices
2 )Tendency to rely on labels to make quick judgments which may be ill
founded and difficult to reverse
3) Tendency to seek acceptance and avoid rejection
4) Tendency to believe we cannot change therefore having a low motivation to
change anything

how does Milgram’s study link to heroism?
Milgram’s studies showed how people blindly follow orders

People to end to obey those in authority + can be agents of society rather
than being autonomous.

How does heroism link to prejudice?

It is a human’s natural tendency to seek acceptance and therefore become
apart of a group; in-group and out-group favouritism. this was demonstrated in
Jan Elliott's blue eye brown eye.

Heroism can be about protecting members of the in-group.
Rosa Parks went to prison in order to protect her race (in-group)).
