Episodic and semantic memory
th
Ribot (French 19 century psychologist) noted that memory loss after
brain injury often varied with the age of the memory:
Recent episodic and semantic memories more susceptible to loss
than remote ones.
Led to the suggestion that memories are re-organized over time,
relying first on a brain region specialized for rapid storage, and
then on a region in which consolidation takes longer.
It is now supposed that the
Hippocampus is a region for the rapid acquisition
Neo-cortex for slower consolidation of memories.
The modern story starts with a patient known as HM.
Who was HM and what did we learn from him?
Temporal lobe removed
Removed the hippocampus
Old memories intact
No retention of new memories (anterograde amnesia)
Every time HM met his psychologist he introduced himself as if he never
met her
