Three questions Ans: When should masking be used? What kind of noise should be used? How much noise should be used? When should masking be used? Ans: anytime the presentation level in the TE, whether by BC or AC, exceeds the minimum interaural attenuation value. whenever there is greater than 10 dB difference between the unmasked BC threshold and the AC threshold of the TE (an apparent air-bone gap). whenever the difference between the unmasked AC threshold of the TE and the BC threshold of the NTE is greater than or equal to 55 dB (or 40 dB for supra-aural earphones). What kind of noise should be used? Ans: Broad-band or white noise -Equal intensity at all frequencies. (rarely use because overkill) Narrow-band noise- Noise restricted to a narrow frequency region (SLHS 305 flashback) (use at 1000 Hz).
