Provide 6 characteristics of (or ‘rules’ for) a good title for a research article or a research
report. [6 marks]
1. The title should not become obscure due to the brevity
2. A title of no longer than Five to Ten words should be used, otherwise it will be too long to
capture the audience’s attention.
3.The title should convey the overall ideology of the article- The reader should know what
the research is about
4. Should outline the purpose of the research
5. The title should include the methods used, for example “An Empirical study on…”
6. The Narrative should be conveyed through the title.
Activity 2:
The following title does not comply with the rules for a good title: ‘Morals down the drain? A
research study Investigating the relationship between different variables of moral
development in South African adolescent boys and girls between 12 and 18 years of age’.
Correct this title by providing a better title which complies with the rules for a good title.
