request more documents@ NUR 240 Week 13 Neurocognitive Disorders Nursing Care of Patients with Mental Health Alterations NEUROCOGNITIVE DISORDERS These disorders affect the brain’s ability to function: - Intellectually - Emotionally - Socially - Occupationally Types: - Delirium - Other names: acute confusion, metabolic encephalopathy, and toxic psychosis - Mild neurocognitive disorder - Major neurocognitive disorder (Dementia) DELIRIUM PREVELANCE AND CO-MORBIDITY An abrupt change in level of consciousness and cognition (including perception, thought content and processing, memory, and behavior). - Transient disorder - r/t underlying condition - Occurs more often in older adults Prevalence: - Hospital setting - prevalence of up to 56%. - 60% of nursing home residents who are 75 years of age or older experience delirium - Approximately 75%-85% of people with a terminal illness develop delirium near death Co-morbidity: - Always exists secondary to another medical condition or substance use Symptoms vary in severity, depending on the time of day: - Typically worsen at night (sundowning) and in the early morning - If the underlying condition is corrected, then COMPLETE recovery should occur RISK FACTORS FOR DELIRIUM
