ICH4801 ASSIGNMENT 2 FOR THE YEAR
2024

UNIQUE CODE: 322543

, SECTION A: COMPULSORY SECTION
Question 1 [40 marks]

Question 1(a) (20 marks) – compulsory:

1. Define “colonialism” in your own words. (2)

Colonialism is a practice or policy where a powerful country extends its control over foreign
territories, often by establishing colonies and generally with the aim of economic
dominance. Over the course of history, this has involved the subjugation and exploitation of
local populations, the extraction of resources, and the imposition of the colonizing country’s
culture and political systems upon the colonized. It has had profound and lasting impacts on
the social, economic, and political structures of affected regions.

2. How does Maldonado-Torres explain the concept of coloniality? (2)

Coloniality, according to Maldonado-Torres (2007) as explained in the passage, refers to the
lasting structures and ideologies left behind by colonialism (Seroto et al., 2020). These
include colonial practices, cultural norms, social relations, and knowledge production that
continue to influence societies even after formal colonial rule has ended.

3. Explain the difference between colonialism and coloniality. (2)

The key difference between colonialism and coloniality lies in their duration and scope.
Colonialism is the active period of political and economic control by a foreign power.
Coloniality, on the other hand, refers to the long-lasting effects of colonialism that persist
even after independence. It's a system of power relations and ideologies that continue to
shape societies (Seroto et al., 2020).
