LCDC Exam Latest Version Graded A+ Define Acculturation Refers to accommodation to the rules and expectations of the majority culture without entirely giving up cultural identity. Define Active listening Attending to verbal/nonverbal aspects of communication without judging or evaluating. This encourages trust and client self-disclosure. Define Agonist An agonist is an agent that binds to a receptor and activates that receptor in order to elicit an effect (typically transmitting a signal to the inside of the cell, either by opening a channel to allow ions to flow in/out, or changing the receptor's shape to cause a cascade of intracellular events to occur). Drugs that are agonists essentially mimic the action of the endogenous (naturally occuring) neurotransmitters, typically with the same or a stronger affinity than the neurotransmitter itself. Example is Methadone Define Antagonist An antagonist is an agent that binds to a receptor but does not elicit the response that the neurotransmitter or an agonist would cause. The antagonist blocks the receptor and prevemts activation by neurotransmitters or other drugs. Example is Naltrexone Define Antidipsotropic A drug whose original or most common use and intended therapeutic effect is to reduce or prevent alcoholic drinking. Define Assessment Those procedures by which a counselor/program identifies and evaluates an individual's strengths, weaknesses, problems, and needs for the development of the treatment plan. Define Assimilated Individuals consciously or subconsciously reject their culture of origin in favor of their adopted culture. These clients may resist placement in a group with clients of their own ethnicity or may prefer a clinician form their adopted culture. Define Assimilation Adaptation to a new culture by taking on a new identity and abandoning the old cultural identity. Define Attending Refers to ways in which the clinician demonstrates that she/he is listening to the client through the use of cues
