Binary A musical structure consisting of two equal, complementary sections Ternary A three-part (ABA) form where the A section is heard twice and the B section consists of contrasting musical material. Rondo A structure where the main theme is heard at least three times, alternating with contrasting sections, e.g. ABACA in its simplest form. Sonata Form A large-scale three-part structure with exposition, development and recapitulation, used for the first movements of many sonatas, symphonies and concertos. (View separate tab devoted to Sonata Form) Exposition The first section in sonata form where the main thematic material is exposed. Development The second section in sonata form where the thematic is manipulated and developed. Recapitulation The third section in sonata form in which the music from the exposition is repeated in the tonic key. Sonata Rondo A blend of sonata and rondo form in which the second theme, or 'B', occurs twice - ABACABA Minuet and Trio A minuet is an elegant dance in 3/4 time, found mainly in music of the Baroque and Classical periods. Together with a trio section it often forms a movement of a symphony or other large scale work. Theme and Variations A piece of music which takes a melody or theme and reimagines or reworks it in terms of key, tempo, rhythm etc. over the course of a number of variation movements Strophic A vocal form where the same music is used for each verse. Tone/Symphonic Poem A one-movement piece of orchestral music which evokes some other non-musical source such as a poem or painting.
