Highly stressful situations or events such as a pandemic, exacerbate the stress healthcare workers endure and can lead to what is known as nursing burnout. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) ICD-11, nursing burnout is a condition conceptualized as the result of unmanaged workplace stress and fatigue, feeling unappreciated, misunderstood and emotionally drained. Nursing burnout consists of three parts, emotional exhaustion. Depersonalization and a reduction in personal accomplishments (Velando-Soriano et, al). The occurrence of nursing burnout is on the rise. In 2020, it was reported that approximately 2/3 of nurse’s experience a period of burn out and it is even more alarming that 69% of nurses under the age of 25 reported experiencing nursing burnout. If the up and coming nurses are becoming burnt out before the possibility of achieving the first career milestone, the profession is headed for trouble. Nurse burnout can happen in any facility, any department and to any nurse. The burn out is often the result of unmanage workplace stress and not a reflection of the level of compassion a nurse possesses. Understanding nursing burnout is important for preventing its consequences and minimizing any elevation of emotional or mental stress that a nurse may already endure (Baek et al., 2020).
