"LETTER 52" (280)
Sigmund Freud (1896)

Summary:
The hysterical attack is not a mere relief, but an action for the purpose of reproducing pleasure. At its root, it is an action motivated
by this desire, although in the eyes of the preconscious it can be justified with other reasons.

For example, some patients have sleep attacks when they are introduced to something sexual while they sleep; They go back to
sleep to relive that experience, often causing hysterical fainting.

Vertigo attacks, crying spells, and other symptoms are often linked to a significant "other," usually an unforgettable prehistoric
memory.

Chronic symptoms such as bedridden mania are also observed. One of our patients continues to whine in his sleep, seeking the
attention of his mother, who died when he was 22 months old.

There do not seem to be attacks as a simple "heightened expression of emotions."

Explanation and conclusion:
The text analyzes the nature of hysterical attacks, proposing that they are not merely an emotional release, but represent an action
with the aim of reproducing pleasure. These attacks are justified on the preconscious level for a variety of reasons.

Specific examples are presented to illustrate this idea. Some patients have sleep attacks because, while they were sleeping,
something sexual was introduced to them. To relive that pleasurable experience, they go back to sleep, and this can lead to
hysterical fainting.

Other examples include bouts of vertigo and crying spells, both of which are also linked to interaction with a significant "o ther,"
often related to a deep prehistoric memory.

In addition, it is mentioned that there are chronic symptoms such as bedridden mania. A specific case is that of a patient wh o
continues to cry in his sleep, seeking the attention and comfort of his mother, who passed away when he was only 22 months ol d.

In conclusion, hysterical attacks and other similar symptoms are not simply an increased expression of emotions, but actions that
seek to relive pleasant experiences of the past, justifying themselves to the preconscious with distinct reasons. These attacks are
deeply rooted in meaningful experiences and prehistoric memories that continue to influence the individual's behavior.

- Some patients have sleep attacks due to sexual experiences during sleep, seeking to relive those experiences.
