Business Research - ANSWER-Business research is defined as a systematic inquiry
that provides information and insights to guide a specified managerial decision.
Business Analytics - ANSWER-The scientific process of transforming data into insight
for making better decisions.
Induction (inductive reasoning) - ANSWER-To draw a conclusion from one or more
particular facts or pieces of evidence; the conclusion explains the facts.
Deduction (deductive reasoning) - ANSWER-A form of reasoning in which the
conclusion must necessarily follow from the reasons given; a deduction is valid if it is
impossible for the conclusion to be false if the premises are true.
Concept - ANSWER-A bundle of meanings or characteristics associated with certain
concrete, unambiguous events, objects, conditions, or situations
Conceptual Scheme - ANSWER-The interrelationships between concepts and
constructs.
Hypothesis - ANSWER-Unsubstantiated assumption about the relationship between
concepts and constructs; it drives the research; a tentative descriptive statement that
describes the relationship between two or more variables; formulated for significance
testing.
Independent Variable - ANSWER-The variable manipulated by the researcher, thereby
causing an effect or change on the dependent variable.
Dependent Variable - ANSWER-The variable measured, predicted, or otherwise
monitored by the researcher; expected to be affected by a manipulation of the
independent variable; aka criterion variable.
Census - ANSWER-A count of all the elements in a target population.
Data - ANSWER-Raw, unprocessed facts in the form of numbers, text, pictures or video
collected by either quantitative or qualitative means.
Primary Data - ANSWER-Data the researcher collects directly to address the specific
problems at hand - the research question; raw and unprocessed.

results of studies done by others and for different purposes than the one for which the
data are being reviewed).
Tertiary Data - ANSWER-The combination of two or more sets of secondary data
(collected by other researchers) that have been used in a new analysis
Nominal Data - ANSWER-Data that provide classification but no order, equal distance,
or natural origin.
Ratio Data - ANSWER-Data that offer classification, order, equal distance, and natural
origin.
Ordinal Data - ANSWER-Data that provide classification and order but no equal
distance or natural origin.

Primary Sources - ANSWER-Original works of research or raw data without
interpretation or pronouncements that represent an official opinion or position include
memos, letters, complete interviews or speeches, laws, regulations, court decisions,
and most government data, including census, economic, and labor data; they are the
most authoritative of all sources.
Secondary Sources - ANSWER-Interpretations of primary data generally without new
research.
Tertiary Sources - ANSWER-Aids to discover primary or secondary sources, such as
indexes, bibliographies, and internet search engines; also may be an interpretation of a
secondary source.
Data Warehouse - ANSWER-Electronic storehouse where vast arrays of collected
integrated data are stored by categories to facilitate retrieval, interpretation, and sorting
by data-mining techniques.
Data Mart - ANSWER-A data collection, smaller than the data warehouse, that
addresses the needs of a particular department or functional area of the business.
Management Dilemma - ANSWER-The problem or opportunity that requires a decision;
a symptom of a problem or an early indication of an opportunity; it reflects the difference
between a desired and an actual condition.
