● Small pyrimidine binds with large purine (constant distance btw DNA backbones =
parallel polynucleotide chains)
● DNA has equal amounts of A + T and C + G
● 2 strands held together through hydrogen bonding btw complementary bases
● 2 anti-parallel polynucleotide strands twist
● PO₄ ³- at C5 of pentose sugar forms a phosphodiester bond (covalent) with OH group at
C3 of other nucleotide
● Sugar-phosphate backbone
● Catalysed by DNA polymerase
