Tutorial Preparation:
Opening: Greetings
Hi everyone, I am Tintsi short for Tintswalo but you can also call me Charlie, and I am your
tutor for “The State, Modernity and the Constitution of the Political” course alternatively
called POLS2006 for the first and second block, equivalent to the entirety of the first
semester. I will first begin by introducing myself and then grant you all an opportunity to do
the same, and then move on to discuss the administrative aspects relating to how these
tutorials will be structured. Please bare in mind that you are permitted to interrupt me at
any given point should you have any questions.
Before I delve into the nitty gritty details, how are you all feeling?
Who am I?
Currently doing Honours in Politics, have a degree in Pols and IR (2 years coursework in
Economics)
Interest lies in diplomacy and security studies (w public policy as a nexus of that
intersection)
I am interested in Politics because it challenges me to think outside of the power dynamics
that are seen as drivers of states and its multifaceted nature encourages me to think of vast
and intersecting ways in which the world and people in it relate and come together to make
regular decisions that shape the world. I believe that it is a stepping stone for me to reach
my dreams of becoming a changemaker and influence the thought patterns of those who
bare a false narrative of what politics is deemed to be.
Expectations:
Etiquette and conduct:
1. Please do ensure that you exercise respect when sharing your opinions and do not
rudely speak over other students, we are all adults in this room so I would assume
that etiquette is not a foreign word in all our vocabularies.
2. Late coming: West campus/ live far (permissible) 30 minutes before the tut ends
(not so much)
3. Sick: If you are feeling ill before or during the tut please let me know by means of
sending me an email or a message on ulwazi. You might need to get up abruptly and
leave, that’s permissible as well provided that you do so in a quiet and considerate
manner, and still send an email once you get home or the day after.
4. I expect that you would have all done your readings before the tutorials every week,
as your participation in the tutorials is heavily reliant on your understanding or lack
thereof of the readings. I understand that at some point in the year you will be
bombarded with an extensive amount of assignments, tight deadlines and other
academic commitments – in this instance previewing and skimming is advised to
understand the key takeaways of the readings.

This tutorials will assume a participatory form, therefore you will be assessed on both your
attendance and your contributions, you speak you receive marks, you don’t well…So ensure
