ACTIVITY 1
Environmental education is an emerging field that has been around for some years.
Yet it is not an easy field to tie down (if one would want to): its boundaries are fuzzy
and interpretations of its documents, foundations and directions are multiple.
1.1. In your understanding, define environmental education? (2)
1.2. Explain why environmental education is considered an emerging field with fuzzy
boundaries. (3)
1.3. Why is it important for teachers in environmental education to teach learners
about the different notions of environmental education history and how they influence
us? Give examples. (5) [10]
Environmental Education: An Evolving Landscape
1.1. Environmental Education Defined
Environmental education can be understood as a continuous learning process that
equips individuals with the knowledge, skills, and values to explore environmental
issues critically. It fosters an appreciation for the natural world and empowers us to
make informed decisions and responsible actions to ensure its sustainability. (2 marks)
1.2. Fuzziness on the Frontiers
Environmental education is considered an emerging field with fuzzy boundaries for a
few reasons:
• Multidisciplinary Nature: It draws from various disciplines like biology,
chemistry, geography, and social sciences, making its scope vast and ever-
expanding. (1 mark)
• Evolving Focus: The emphasis in environmental education has shifted over
time. Initially, it focused on raising awareness. Today, it tackles problem-
solving skills and fostering action-oriented mindsets. (1 mark)
