Clarifier adjusting register, checking for understanding, making word pictures Culture Broker providing a necessary cultural framework for understanding - clearing misunderstandings resulting from cultural differences The Advocate assisting the patient in solving a problem 7 Ethics 1.Confidentiality 2.Accuracy 3.Advocacy 4.Impartiality 5.Respect 6.Professionalism 7.Cultural Competency Confidentiality Nothing that happens during a session is to be shared outside -- never disclosing information attained during a different session --- ( Imagine the patient being an english speaker, what information would be shared?) Accuracy & Completeness Everything that is being said will be interpreted including how something is said and gesture Cultural Competency communication in a cultural context Impartiality neutral objective interpretation without any prejudices Respect patient makes their own decisions and MUST be respected EX: do you need more information? do you need to talk to your family? etc Professionalism arrive on time dress appropriate withdraw if you : are not trained / subject matter makes you uncomfortable / conflict of interest no gifts * (common sense) Advocacy if health, welfare dignity is at risk ** careful analyzing of situation 4 Modes of interpreting 1.Consecutive 2. Simultaneous 3. Sight Translation 4. Summary Consecutive Interpreting with pauses Simultaneous Interpeting while talking ( especially when emotional) Sight translation NEVER Sight translate consent forms ( they should be summarized by the provider) , translate with provider in the room in case there are questions. Summarization It is only ok to summarize if there is unnecessary information that is not viable. e.g. If you are interpreting for a patient, and the doctor talks to a group of student doctors about the case it is ok to tell the patient that the doctor is having a conversation about her case, as this is a teaching hospital. Mode of interpretation choosing the right mode of interpreting for the correct situation, sometimes a combination is possible How to intervene 1.Stay calm 2. Make sure the intervention is transparent 3. Switch from first to third person 4. Do not make assumptions 5. Go back to 1st person and interpreting, let provider solve the problem
