Unit 6 – Integrative nervous physiology
MOVEMENT
See page 34 for recap on what causes movement.
ROLE OF THE NEURAL SYSTEM IN MOVEMENT
o Describe the components of the neural system: CNS and PNS
o Muscle spindle and GTO
o Sensory and motor neurons
o Somatic and autonomic nervous systems
o Structure of a neuron
o Action potential
o Transmission of action potential
o Reflex arc
o Motor unit
ROLE OF THE MUSCULAR SYSTEM IN MOVEMENT
o Muscle contraction: more than 430 skeletal muscles:
o Know types of contractions
o Structure of muscle
o Neuromuscular junction
o Sliding filament theory
o Muscle fiber
o Frequency of neural stimulation
o Fatigue:
- Decline in force capacity with repeated stimulation or during a given time period
- Occurs from disruption in the chain of events between CNS and the muscle fiber
o Four components impact voluntary muscle action:
➢ CNS
➢ PNS
➢ Neuromuscular junction
➢ Muscle fiber
