What is emotion?
Emotion – a conscious evaluative reaction to some event
Mood – a feeling state that is not clearly linked to some event
Affect – the automatic response that something is good or bad
Conscious emotion versus automatic affect
Conscious emotion – a powerful and clearly unified feeling state, such as anger or joy
- Emotions take more time to form, but also contain more information.
- Emotions consist of mental and physical aspects.
Automatic affect – a quick response of liking or disliking toward something
- Affects form almost immediately and unconsciously.
Anthropolinguistics – the study of a culture by examining its language
- For emotions, anthropolinguistics show that bad is stronger than good, as there are
simply more words describing bad emotions than positive emotions.
