an explanation of the relative pronoun "dont" in French understanding when to use this relative pronoun

Content preview

The relative pronoun ‘Dont’ in FRENCH
It represents possession

Dont is generally used when the noun replaced is an object of the
preposition ‘de’. It is used with verbs followed by ‘de’ (parler de, rêver
de, se méfier de, avoir besoin de, avoir peur de, être content de, se
souvenir de etc.), as well as to show possession (similar to ‘whose’ or
‘of which’ in English): Voici le livre dont je t'ai parlé.

When translated in English, it means whose, of whom, of which. It may be used to
refer to persons or things. It does not change its form, nor does it have to agree
with anything.

Plural noun: les films dont tu parles (the films you are talking about)
Singular noun: la femme dont la voiture est en panne (the woman whose car has
broken down)

Think of ‘don’t’ as a way of joining two sentences thereby avoiding repetition:

Voici la robe. J’ai besoin de la robe. (twice)

Voici la robe dont j’ai besoin (once)

Voici la maison. Je t’ai parlé de la maison. (twice)

Voici la maison dont je t’ai parlé. (once)

Voici les chaussures. Je rêve de les chaussures. (twice)

Voici les chaussures dont je rêve (once)

, Voici le serpent. J’ai peur du serpent (twice)

Voici le serpent dont j’ai peur (once)

The above examples show that ‘dont’ is a way of joining two sentences/
observations/ thoughts together so as to avoiding repetition of the thing being
spoken about.

Voici mon ami dont je t’ai parlé
C’est la robe noire dont je rêve
C’est le chien dont je m’occupe tous les jours (s’occuper de – to look after)
J’ai acheté du vin dont Jean m’a parlé
J’ai vu le film dont nous avons parlé
Je voudrais voir le film dont tout le monde parle
J’ai pris la verre d’eau dont il a envie
la femme dont la voiture est en panne (the woman whose car has broken
down)

Voici les choses dont nous avons besoin

L’araignée est le seul insect dont j’ai peur

Le métier dont j’ai envie

La chose dont je suis fier (fière) c’est ma langue
