Taking the mind seriously
Het proeven van koffie, het hebben van gedachten over de stad en het voelen van emoties zijn
voorbeelden van mental states (mentale toestanden). Samen vormen deze mental states de
conscious mind (bewuste geest), het is zeker dat deze bestaat.
A preliminary characterization of the conscious mind
Tussen koffie van thuis en koffie van een restaurant zit een kwalitatief verschil, het proeven van koffie
of het zien van een flikkerend kaarslicht hebben allemaal kwalitatieve aspecten. In filosofisch jargon
heet dit qualia/quale of ‘what-it-is-likeness’. Volgens Thomas Nagel hebben we verschillende
ervaringen wanneer onze zintuigen zijn gestimuleerd. Dit geld ook voor vleermuizen die echolocatie
gebruiken. Omdat wij geen vleermuis zijn, kunnen we dit niet ervaren. (what-it-is-likeness), dit is de
eerste type mental state: fenomenale ervaringen. Alle fenomenale ervaringen zijn gekarakteriseerd
met een kwalitatief gevoel, fenomenaal beschrijft hoe iets voelt tot ons.
Dus: de eerste type mentale staat is gevormd door fenomenale ervaringen, welke gekarakteriseerd
zijn door ‘what-it-is-likeness’.
De tweede mentale staat is de cognitieve staat. De cognitieve staat kan gekarakteriseerd worden
door te zeggen dat ze over een intentionaliteit beschikken. Intentionaliteit is de eigenschap om
ergens over te gaan, dit wordt ook wel ‘aboutness’ genoemd. De gedachten over een stad is een
cognitieve staat en een vorm van representation. Het oermodel van een mentale toestand met
intentionaliteit is de propositional attitude (propositionele houding). Een propositie is de mening van
een zin, bijvoorbeeld de zin ‘I like Tilburg’ betekent hetzelfde als ‘ik hou van Tilburg’. Je kunt
verschillende houdingen hebben naar een propositie, bijvoorbeeld het weten, hopen, willen of
geloven.
Samenvatting mentale staten
1. Fenomenale ervaringen gekarakteriseerd door hun eigenschappen van het bezitten van
qualia of what-it-is-likeness.
2. Cognitieve staten gekarakteriseerd door hun eigenschappen van het bezitten van
intentionaliteit of aboutness.
3. Emoties gekarakteriseerd door hun eigenschappen van het bezitten van what-it-is-likeness én
aboutness.
Het is mogelijk dat er mentale staten zijn met maar één van de eigenschappen, qualia/what-it-is-
likeness of intentionality/aboutness. Het ervaren van bijvoorbeeld lichtvlekken wanneer je op je ogen
drukt is een ervaring dat alleen over what-it-is-likeness beschikt en niet over aboutness. We kunnen
mentale staten onderscheiden die beschikken over qualia of over intentionaliteit.
The conscious and the unconscious mind
De relatie tussen de conscious en de unconscious mind is dat de staten van de onbewuste geest onder
de juiste omstandigheden bewust kunnen worden.

Een voorbeeld hiervan is je persoonlijke geheugen, bijvoorbeeld het ophalen van een
jeugdherinnering waar je eerst nog niet aan dacht.
Veel staten, bijvoorbeeld de breinstaat die je hartslag reguleert, behoren niet tot de bewuste of
onbewuste geest. Ze zijn dus geen mentale staten omdat ze niet een bewuste staat kunnen worden.
