Inleiding
Tijdens opname op de Acute Opname Afdeling (AOA) worden algemeen dagelijkse
levensverrichtingen (ADL) door verpleegkundigen gedaan, waarbij opvalt dat mondverzorging vaak
verwaarloosd wordt. Dit implementatieplan is ontwikkeld om de focus te leggen op het optimaliseren
van mondzorg bij patiënten tijdens verblijf op de AOA. Onder mondverzorging valt in dit
implementatieplan minimaal twee keer per dag het poetsen van de tanden; dit is volgens het protocol
van de instelling (2).

Het belang van dagelijkse mondverzorging kan niet genoeg worden benadrukt. Een gebrek aan
goede mondverzorging kan leiden tot uiteenlopende problemen. Zo is samenhang gevonden tussen
mondverzorging enerzijds en anderzijds diabetes mellitus, hart-en vaatziekten, reumatoïde artritis,
longziekten, infecties, gaatjes en pijn (3,4). Bovendien kan het leiden tot een verminderde
voedselinname als gevolg van pijn of ongemak, wat kan resulteren in gewichtsverlies of ondervoeding
(5).


Probleem
Op de afdeling hebben alle patiënten te maken met mondverzorging. Bij gemiddeld 6 van de 20
patiënten wordt mondverzorging gedaan in de dagdienst. Tijdens de late dienst wordt gemiddeld bij
15 van de 20 mondverzorging verricht. De mondverzorging die wordt verricht bij deze patiënten
