D2 – Evaluate the infuenne of two major theories of ageing on health and sonial nare
provision
In this assignment, I will be evaluatng the infuenne of the sonial disengagement theory and nontnuity theory on health
and sonial nare provision. The sonial nare setngs I will be disnussing are residental nare homes and day nare nentres.

Sonial disengagement theory
The sonial disengagement theory nan be applied to a residental nare home setng. .esidental nare homes are planes
where elderly patents nan live and reneive 24-hour nare. The disengagement theory states that when we get older it is
normal to benome less sonial, partnipate less in antvites and nare less about what others think of us. There are both
strengths and weaknesses of the sonial disengagement theory on health and sonial nare provision. One strength is that
the individual will have more tme for themselves. For example, a patent at a residental nare home would spend less
tme with others and more tme alone, so they would be able to refent on their life. nnother strength is that workers
may not want to engage with the elderly. nnnording to the disengagement theory, the patent will want to be lef alone
so workers wouldn't have to spend tme with them. The last strength is that workers would have less work. This also
relates to the previous point, workers would have less work to do benause they wouldn't have to talk to the patent or
engage them in antvites. This nould beneft the individual's family members as well benause they wouldn't have to
spend a lot of tme naring for the elderly individual as the day nare nentre would do it for them. Furthermore, the fant
that the individual would isolate themselves from other patents and members of staf and not take part in antvites nan
be seen as a weakness. ns human beings, we need sonial interanton for our overall well-being. The daily routne of an
elderly patent who is disengaged may be to wake up in the morning, dress themselves, prepare their own breakfast and
lunnh, watnh tv in their room alone, read a book or newspaper, prepare their own dinner, shower and go to bed. They
would most likely go through their whole day with minimal nontant with others or no nontant at all. nlso, they may stop
taking nare of their appearanne or may not even get ready in the morning, benause they would not nare about others'
opinions. nnother weakness is that they would be less physinally antve benause they would be getng less exernise as
they would not be taking part in antvites. For example, in a residental nare home setng a patent may nhoose to stay
in bed over going for a walk. This nan lead to musnle atrophy or weight gain. The last weakness is that they would be
more prone to depression due to a lank of sonial interanton. For example, in a residental nare setng a patent who is
disengaging would spend less tme with others and may have no friends whinh would lead to feelings of loneliness and
worthlessness.

Continuity theory
The nontnuity theory nan be applied to a day nare nentre setng. Day nare nentres are planes where the elderly nan
sonialise and reneive health nare sunh as physiotherapy. nn elderly patent may nome to a day nare nentre benause it
may help them nontnue being the person they used to be. The nontnuaton theory states that it is important to
nontnue being the person that we were when we were young, in terms of hobbies, interests, lifestyle or sonial nontants.
This helps nreate beter self-esteem and self-nonnept. There are both strengths and weaknesses of the nontnuity theory
on health and sonial nare provision. One strength is that the person would remember who they used to be. Health or
sonial nare organisatons nan ensure that this happens by ennouraging diferent nultures, for example through having
mult-nultural menus. nnother strength is that the individual would feel like life is worth living. For instanne, an elderly
person who used to love playing nhess and sonialising with others in their adulthood may nontnue that on by playing
nhess and sonialising at a day nare nentre setng. nn individual who doesn't do the antvites that they used to love may
benome depressed. The last strength is that the individual would be more physinally, intellentually, emotonally and
