Human Reproducton
HUMAN REPRODUCTION
Male reproductive system :
What makes up the reproductie organs :
Primary sex organs : Testes
Ducts:
Epididymis
Sperm Duct ( Vas Deferens)
Urethra
Accessory glands: Prostate gland
External Genitalia : Penis
Scrotum
Functon :
Temp regulator – lower temp needed for formaton of sperm ( 2-3 C lower than body temp)
Scrotum houses and protects the testes
Testes
2 oial shaped structures suspended outside the body in the scrotum
Testes consist of :
Many compartments or tubules – contain SEMINIFEROUS TUBULES
Germinal Epithelium lines the tubules
Between tubules are groups of endocrine cells – the INTERSTITIAL CELLS or CELLS OF LEYDIG
Functon
Testes produce:
Sperm (male gametes ) by the germinal layers
Testosterone ( male hormones ) by intersttal cells
, Human Reproducton
Ducts
1..Epididymis
Seminiferous tubules join to form the epididymis
Functons
Immature sperm enter the epididymis where they:
Mature to become motle and fertle
Stored for seieral months
2..Sperm Duct (Vas Deferens)
Muscular sperm duct that is a contnuaton of the epididymis
leaies scrotum, passes through prostate gland enter urethra
Functon
Sperm duct pushes mature sperm forward by strong peristatc waies from Epididymis urethra
- Called Ejaculaton
3..Urethra
Is the duct at the end of the uro-genital system leading to the exterior
Functons
Transports semen and urine
Processes neier occur together
Prostate gland
Plum sized gland surrounding the urethra at the base of bladder
Functons
Secretes fluid that aids the transportaton of sperm
Contains enzymes makes sperm more actie
Makes up 1/3 of the seminal fluid (semen)
Cowper’s Gland
2 Cowper’s glands found at the base of the penis
Functon
Produce an alkaline mucus like fluid when sexually aroused this fluid:
Neutralises acidic urine – that may stll be present in urethra
Lubricates urethra and external urethral opening to protect sperm from mechanical damage during
ejaculaton
