Origins and aims of public health
Contributors to public health systems – Beveridge
report, NHS ACT 1946, rising public anxiety
about the risk of epidemics; eg. Measles, TB.
Aims of public health policy:
1. planning national provision of health care
and promoting the health of the
population.
2. Identifying and monitoring needs of the
population (issues in Herts).
3. Identifying and reducing inequalities
between groups and communities in society
(areas of deprivation)
4. Protecting individuals, groups and
communities in society from threats to
health and wellbeing that include
environmental hazards and communicable
diseases.
5. Strategies for developing public health
policy; minimising harm of environmental
factors; include recycling, waste
management, pollution reduction, ensuring
food safety. Addressing national health
problems over a period of time. Look at
national and local provision
