Archipelago - ANS An archipelago is a group of islands closely scattered in a body of water. Usually, this body of water is the ocean, but it can also be a lake or river. Most archipelagoes are made of oceanic islands. This means the islands were formed by volcanoes erupting from the ocean floor. island - ANS land area, smaller than a continent, completely surrounded by water Key/Cay - ANS Cay, also spelled key, small, low island, usually sandy, situated on a coral reef platform. Such islands are commonly referred to as keys in Florida and parts of the Caribbean. Sand cays are usually built on the edge of the coral platform, opposite the direction from which the prevailing winds blow.
