Week 2 - Urinary System Edapt/Class Notes Kidneys are responsible for filtration, reabsorption, and excretion. ** Kidney and Cardio issues go hand in hand** ** Look at comparison slide AKI and CKD** **Urea: toxic protein from the liver** Conditions that can affect urinary elimination are: • DM o Neuropathy of Kidneys • Uncontrolled hypertension • Infection • Cancer • Kidney Issues • Pyelonephritis • CKD • AKI • Nephrolithiasis/Urolithiasis/Renal Calculi (Kidney stones) Altered urinary elimination can cause: • Hypertension/Hypotension • Anemia • Metabolic acidosis • Electrolyte imbalance • Calcium-phosphorus imbalance (inverse) Lab Values that measure kidney’s ability to filter are: • GFR (Glomerular Filtration Rate) - 125 or higher • Creatinine - 0.6 - 1.2 • BUN (Blood Urea Nitrogen) - 10-20 o If higher than 20 = dehydration Diagnostic Imaging • Cystoscopy • Camera used to visualize bladder and urethra • US with dye o Increase fluid intake to assist with excreting dye from the body o Assess for shellfish/iodine allergy
