Biodiversity- What is it and why is it important to Humans?
Fish Farming:
FISH FARMING: involves pens/small spaces and aims to produce more fish and
reduce the overfishing of wild fish.
Advantages to Fish Farming:
● Reduce overfishing
● Control the population
● Controls the biodiversity of fish
● Produce more fish
● Better fed fish
● Grows faster
● Protected from predators and diseases
Disadvantages to Fish Farming:
● Diseases can spread to wild fish, especially if the controlled fish are non-indigenous
(not originally from the area)
● Use of antibiotics, which humans will eventually consum
● Conditions of the water change from uneaten food and faeces
NATIVE/INDIGENOUS: Organisms that have always been in an area/country.
NON-INDIGENOUS: Organisms that have been introduced into an area and were not
always found there.
Some questions that need to be asked before a control programme is introduced include:
● What will the long term effects of the introduced animal be?
● How will the introduced animal be dealt with once they have fulfilled their purpose?
● How will the introduced animal be controlled?
● What will be the effect of the animal on the biodiversity of the wild?
Eutrophication:
EUTROPHICATION: The addition of nutrients to an ecosystem than it originally had.
1. Fertiliser is added to a field.
2. Heavy rain washes fertiliser off, nitrates and phosphates dissolve in soil water
3. High nitrate and phosphate concentrations in the water encourage plants and algae
to grow rapidly.
4. This encourages plants to grow more rapidly, this is an Algal bloom and blocks
sunlight from reaching the water,
5. The water then becomes anoxic and kills any non-bacterial organisms due to a lack
of oxygen.
