COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING, COMPUTING AND APPLIED SCIENCES GENERAL ENGINEERING This document describes the policies common to all ENGR courses. Students are responsible for reading the entire syllabus, including these general policies and the course specifics for the section and course. The syllabus specifics for the course section may be contained in another file. The instructor will post important messages on the course management system. Students should check the course management system at least every day for announcements. All schedules, policies, procedures, and assessments for the course are subject to change in the event of extenuating circumstances, by mutual agreement of the students and individual instructor, and/or to ensure better student learning. Class attendance is critical to the educational process; therefore, students should attend scheduled courses regularly if they are to attain their academic goals. Students are expected to arrive on time and attend every scheduled meeting of the class. If a student arrives after the instructor has begun the instruction for the day, the student will be counted as late. If the instructor is late, then students are expected to wait 15 minutes for the instructor to arrive. If a student is sick, the student should exercise good judgment about exposing classmates and faculty to contagious illnesses. Students should use the University Notification of Absence form to notify their instructor of illness or other reason for absence. Additional communication with the instructor is required to develop a continued plan of study. A student with an excessive number of unexcused absences, with “excessive” defined for General Engineering courses as one class more than a week’s worth of classes, will receive a 5-point penalty from the final course grade for each additional unexcused absence. Arriving late to a class or leaving class before class is completed will count as ½ of an unexcused absence in the course. If excessive absences occur before the last day to drop a course with a W the student may be dropped from the course for failure to engage in class activities and examinations. Attendance policies for a specific course may be more restrictive. Consult the individual course specific syllabus. Excused Absences In the event of an emergency or unexpected absence, the student should contact the course instructor as soon as possible. For planned absences, contact should take place at least one week before the missed class, exam, or activity. Students should use the University Notification of Absence form to notify their instructors of absences. Excused absences require written documentation. Notifications generated through the Notification of Absences page are NOT considered excused until documentation is provided and approved by the instructor. Make-up work will be accepted without penalty for excused absences. It is the student’s responsibility to follow up with the instructor to discuss the details of make-up work. For unexcused absences, make-up work is at the discretion of the instructor and may not be granted in all cases; in some instances, make-up work may be permitted with a penalty. In all instances, required make-up work verification will be sent via email by the instructor; no verbal make-up discussions will be considered valid unless followed up by an official email. See the Undergraduate Catalog under Academic Regulations, Classwork, Excused Absences for the list of approved excused absences. Inclement Weather Policy For an exam scheduled at the time of a university closing due to inclement weather, University power outage, etc. the logistics will be communicated via email and/or course management system within one business day of the weather-related cancellation. Any extension or postponement of assignments must be granted by the instructor via email or course management system within one business day of the weather-related cancellation. If no extension or postponement is posted, any hardcopy assignments due at the time of a class cancellation will be due at the next in-person class meeting, and electronic assignment deadlines will remain the same. General Engineering Course Syllabus Updated: December 21, 2022 Return to Table of Contents Page 2 of 8 Academic Continuity Plan Clemson has developed an Academic Continuity Plan for academic operations. Should university administration officially determine that the physical classroom facility is not available to conduct classes, class will be conducted in a virtual (online) form. The university issues official disruption notifications through email, website, text notification, and social media. When notified, use one of the following links to navigate to Clemson Canvas where you will find important information about how we will conduct class:  Primary access link:  Secondary access link, if needed:  You can also use the Canvas Student App. Visit the downloads page for this app. Course activities will occur through our Canvas course and related software, including but not limited to:  Additional course content provided via: Zoom, PowerPoint, files, or articles  Assignments: Canvas, MyLab Engineering, MATLAB Grader, and GradeScope Emergency Preparedness Statement Emergency procedures have been posted in all buildings and on all elevators. Students should be reminded to review these procedures for their own safety. All students and employees should be familiar with guidelines from the Clemson Police Department. Visit here for information about safety. Clemson University is committed to providing a safe campus environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. As members of the community, we encourage you to take the following actions to be better prepared in case of an emergency: 1. Ensure you are signed up for emergency alerts 2. Download the Rave Guardian app to your phone 3. Learn what you can do to prepare yourself in the event of an active threat Grades Grading Scale A = 90 to 100 B = 80 to 89 C = 70 to 79 D = 60 to 69 F = 0 to 59 All grades in General Engineering are TRUNCATED, consistent with Clemson’s GPA calculation policy. What this means is: if a student’s final average is 86.3 the student will receive a B; if it is 89.6 the student will receive a B; if it is 89.9, the student will receive a B. Grade Reports Grades in all ENGR courses are kept using an online grade book in the course management system. The instructor will not issue a separate grade report for midterm grades. A short story in Reader’s Digest in July 1996 makes this point: A couple of days after taking a final examination, I was disappointed to discover that I was one point short of an A. So, I asked my teacher, who was also my varsity football coach, if he could bump my grade up a notch. ‘If you run the ball 99 yards and get tackled at the one-yard line,’ he replied, ‘do you think the referee is going to give you a touchdown?’
