CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Applies knowledge of etiology and pathophysiology to provide an

understanding of the health care needs of children and childbearing families. Examines the roles
of the associate degree nurse in applying the nursing process and implementing the ordered plan
of treatment for childbearing and childrearing families. Introduces growth and development
components and how they impact therapeutic communication, family development theories,
principles of family nursing, therapeutic interventions, and teaching-learning techniques when
providing nursing care to children and child-rearing families.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the
student will be expected to:


1. Analyze the role of the associate degree nurse as a member of the inter/intraprofessional
team in relation to nursing care of childbearing and childrearing families. (SLO 1, 5, 7)
2. Describe theoretical concepts of growth and development, family development, and
family nursing. (SLO 2)
3. Apply the nursing process and concepts of evidence-based practice, culturally competent,
holistic, and patient- centered care to the care of childbearing and childrearing families.(SLO
1, 4, 6)
4. Explain the ordered plan of treatment, including appropriate communication techniques,
for children experiencing alterations in health. (SLO 1, 2, 4, 5)

5. Apply principles of growth and development in relation to the health care needs of

6. Explain the ordered plan of treatment, including appropriate communication techniques
for childbearing women and infants through normal pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum

7. Discuss nursing implications related to safety issues impacting childbearing and
childrearing families. (SLO 1, 2)
8. Demonstrate proficiency in dosage calculations and medication administration. (SLO 1,

9. Identify the unique needs of culturally and ethnically diverse maternal-child patients and families
using the family centered care approach. (SLO 1, 6)
10. Apply principles of nutrition to care of the children and childbearing women, including
nutritional variations associated with culturally diverse patients. (SLO 1, 5, 6)
11. Analyze parenting behaviors that promote the wellbeing of the newborn and children. (SLO 2, 5)
12. Assess and manage electronic health data in the delivery of safe, quality patient-centered care of
