INTERVENTIONS

In addition to professional treatment, you can do some things that patients can do for themself
that build on their treatment plan and help speed recovery.

• Make healthy lifestyle choices.

• Set realistic expectations.

• Make time for yourself.

• Avoid isolation.

• Ask for help.

EDUCATION

• Get as much rest as you can.

, • Accept help from family and friends, try not to isolate self.

• Connect with other new moms.

• Create time to take care of yourself, try to be active and exercise.

• Avoid alcohol and recreational drugs, which can make mood swings worse.

• Set realistic goals for yourself.

• Expect your mood to improve gradually, not immediately.

• Postpone important decisions, such as getting married or divorced, or changing jobs
until you feel better.

• Continue to educate yourself about depression. (NIH, 2018)
TREATMENT

Postpartum depression is often treated with psychotherapy, medication or both.

• Psychotherapy: It may help to talk through the patients concerns with a psychiatrist or
psychologist (APA, 2020).

• Antidepressants: The practitioner may recommend an antidepressant. Work with the
doctor/practitioner to weigh the potential risks/benefits of starting an antidepressant
(APA, 2020).

With appropriate treatment, postpartum depression symptoms usually improve. In some cases,
postpartum depression can continue, becoming chronic depression. It's important to continue
treatment after the patient begins to feel better. Stopping treatment too early may lead to a
relapse. From the information that is currently known about M.A.’s symptoms, level of
functioning, and behavior (PsyWeb.com, 2020); the following multi-axial DSM diagnosis has
been given for M.A.:

• Axis I: F53.0 Major depressive disorder, first episode, severe without psychotic features,
with postpartum depression onset

• Axis II: no diagnosis

• Axis III: Childbirth

• Axis IV: Immigration, marital tension, death of brother, physical separation from family

• Axis V: GAF = 37 (on admission)

Based on the clinic visit with Marisol, the clinician has been able to determine that M.A. meets
the criteria for a major depressive disorder postpartum onset. To make this assessment, the
clinician had to be certain that M.A. experienced at least five of the symptoms for a Major
