, About Alan Paton
Born 1903 in Pietermaritzburg
full name Alan Stewart Paton
He was a South African writer and anti-apartheid activist.
Best known for the publication of his 1948 Novel: Cry, the
Beloved Country.
He came from a strict Christan background.
He graduated from Maritzburg College at the age of 15 in 1918.
He studied for a Bachelor of Science degree and the then
University of Natal
In 1935 he became a principal at the Diep kloof Reformatory for
black offenders in Johannesburg.
He retired in a small town in Botha’s Hill outside of Hillcrest.
He died in 1956.
