Understand and compare the different measures – Morbidity is another term for illness. Prevalence is a measure often used to determine the level of morbidity in a population. Morbidity is NOT death. Prevalence is a measure of disease that allows us to determine a person’s likelihood of having a disease. The number of prevalent cases is the total number of cases of disease existing in a population. P=total number of cases of a disease/total population Mortality is another term for death. A mortality rate is the number of deaths due to a disease divided by the total population. M=deaths/total population Incidence is a measure of disease that allows us to determine a person’s probability of being diagnosed w a disease during a given period of time. I=newly diagnoses cases of a disease. Incidence rate = number of new cases of a disease/number of persons at risk. It is the number of newly diagnoses cases of a disease. Incidence- 5 women have cancer/population of 200 females=0.025 or 2500 oer 100000 (probability of being dx w a disease within a given time) Prevalence- total pop of 40000 and 1200 were recently dx w cancer, and 3500 have cancer, prevalence is total number with cancer/total pop (4700/40000=0.1175 or 0.1175x100000=11750 per 100000). Mortality – 25 deaths due to lung cancer/30000 = number x 100000
