- de eerste wetenschappelijke initiatieven kregen vorm in een militaire context.
- Ook de eerste vertaalopleidingen ontstonden in een militaire context.
Vanaf de jaren 1970: …een poly-, inter-, of post-discipline ?
• enerzijds een open blik en een brede kijk
• anderzijds verschillende risico’s:

Besluit: de geschiedenis van de vertaalwetenschap kent een hobbelig parcours, maar wordt
wel duidelijk gemarkeerd door een pre-wetenschappelijke en een wetenschappelijke fase.

1. De tekstuele benadering
= onderzoek naar vertaalproducten, door bron- en doelteksten met elkaar te
vergelijken
2. De cognitieve benadering
= onderzoek naar het vertaalproces, aan de hand van empirische methodes
3. De sociologische benadering
= onderzoek naar (vnl.) de vertaler, aan de hand van interviews, enquêtes, …
4. De culturele benadering
= onderzoek binnen een bredere context, bijvoorbeeld een literaire beweging, een
ideologische invloed t.e.m. de definitie van vertaling zelf
geen absolute scheiding tussen de vier benaderingen
