Digestive System
Mouth - Where food enters the digestive system. Site of mechanical digestion. Esophagus - Muscular tube that connects the mouth to the stomach. Peristalsis forces food through this organ. Stomach - Food goes from the esophagus into this organ. Small Intestine - The major site of chemical digestion and absorption in the digestive system. It is lined with villi that increase surface area and aid in absorption. Large Intestine - This organ is where excess water is absorbed. Rectum - This organ holds/stores waste. Anus - This is a two inch long canal that connects the rectum to the outside of the body. Pancreas - This organ produces enzymes that aid in chemical digestion. This organ also produces insulin. Liver - This organ produces bile, which is used in the digestion of fats. Gall Bladder - This organ stores bile.
