P3 describe current patterns of ill health and how they are monitored
LIFE EXPECTANCY
The life expectancy for the national average for females is 83.2 years old and the life
expectancy for men is 79.5. In Leeds the figures are worse than the national average in
both women and men. This is because women's expectancy in Leeds is 82.4 which is 0.8
years less than the national average. Mens is 78.4 which is 1.1 years less than the national
average. In contrast Wiltshire shows than they are the same in both men and women as
Leeds. This means that both are worse than the national average for their life expectancy
rates. This could show us that Leeds and Wiltshire have poorer quality health care than the
rest of the UK because if it was better quality then them areas life expectancy rates may be
higher.
DEPRIVATION
The deprivation rates for the national average is 21.8%. In comparison, Wiltshire has a much
lower rate than the national average at 13.5%. Leeds’ deprivation rate in is worse than the
national average and higher than Wiltshires at 26.6%.
CHILDREN'S HEALTH
The national average for obese children that are in year 6 is 19.1%. Leeds is slightly higher
than the national average at 19.3%. Whereas Wiltshires child obesity rate is smaller than the
national average at 15.1%. This shows that there may be more attention to child obesity
prevention campaigns and strategies in Wilshire compared to Leeds and the rest of the UK.
Another issue that is observed within children's health is alcohol specific related stays in
under 18’s, the national average rate is 36.6%. In comparison to the national average,
Leeds’ rate is 27.1% and Wiltshire’s is 39.6%. This could show that there is more of an
education in Leeds on the effects of excessive alcohol consumption compared to Wiltshire
and the rest of the UK, so the rates are much lower.
Lastly, another issue that is observed within children’s health is under 18 conceptions. The
national average rate of under 18 conceptions is 22.%, Leeds is 29.4% and Wiltshire’s is
16.1%. This could show us that in Wiltshire there is a better education within school on
contraception and how to avoid young pregnancys. Whereas in Leeds their education on
contraception might not be as good and they may not have as good of resources as
Wiltshire so they’re left with a higher conception rate in under 18’s.
ADULT HEALTH
In adult health the national average is 16.9% for smoking prevalence. In contrast to this,
Leeds’ rate is 18.5% and Wiltshires is 14.3%. Wiltshires may be lower than the national
average and leeds’ rate because there may be more health campaigns and strategies based
around stopping people from smoking and people could have more knowledge from this on
the risks and facts.
Another area within adult health that has been monitored is excess weight. The national
average for this is 64.6%, Leeds’ is 62.3 and Wiltshires is 63.6%. Both of the areas that I am
comparing have lower excess weight rates than the national average. This could be due to
the fact that these areas are more focused on how to maintain a healthy weights and healthy
eating strategies, so their rates fall below the national averages.
