Content preview

I will be explaining the ethical concerns facing the communities in which Primark operates in and
suggest measures that could be taken to improve corporate responsibility.
In terms of factory workers where women are not being treated well, Primark has joined with
Business for social responsibility , local partners and suppiers on the project called health enables
returns in order to provide healthcare and education to the women working in the factories that help
make Primark products. The project HERhealth chooses women from factories and trains them
about their health, learning and understanding. They are also taught about healthy eating, hiv ,
personal hygiene and other important factors which women should know.Primark joined with the
department for international development in order to improve working conditions for the
workers. They are also going to improve the well being of workers and reduce poverty in the markets
where primark operates. Primark also provide training for gender equality and traning the females
nurses in order to create positive changes for the women and in order for their famileies to
benefit.Primark and the DFID are working to improve the lives of women in terms of their education
and their child health and their safety. They are also working to stop issues such as health problems
and gender equality.Primark and the DFID will also support the victims and Rana Plaza disaster and
their families.Primark claim they are making sure the people who make their products are working in
good conditions, treated well and paid fairly. Not only do they health within the factory however they
also help with health, education and helping the workers understand the rights they have. There has
been 2,629 factory inspections in 2015 to avoid a situation like the rana plaza happening
again.Primark also inspect the factories before they work with them to get an insight of the working
condtions.Primark paid $14m to support the victims of the rana plaza incident and the compensation
paid is long term for the victims and their families, they still support the victims through a prject
called PAshe Achi in order to improve the confidence of the vicims.Primark have a code fo conduct
which suppliers and factores must abide by in order to work with primark and the code of conduct
has rules such as there shold be good working conditions, workers treated well and paid fairly
(Primark,2016).
Ethical trading initiative (ETI) is a charity which promotes respect for workers and their rights. There
are many companies which are members of this charity and primark is also a member.joing ETI
helps businesses to look ethical and it protect workers rights. To be a member the base code must
be followed such as employement is freely chosen companies must abide by this as they all use
factories they must make sure nobody is being forced to work, child labour shall not be used,
companies must make sure no children are working in the factories, living wages are paid , workers
should not be paid below this, working hours are not excessive; workers should not be forced to
work over the agreed working hours and they should not work excessive hours even if it to meet
deadlines, no harsh or inhumane treatment is allowed; there should not be any abuse especially as
women face this a lot in the factories, Working conditions are safe and hygienic for the workers so
there should be clean toilets and water,Freedom of association; workers should be allowed to join or
create a trade union to help working conditions as many have lost their job or their lives due to
doing this, there also should be no discrimination as women are usualy paid the lowest and there
should be regular employment for the workers they should not be told not to work if they need to
work to provide for themselves and their families. These are the codes ETI want to be
followed(ETI,2016).
Associated British Foods (ABF) owns Primark and in terms of how companies are ranked ethically
ABF is the lowest in terms of Land, women being treated, farmers, workers, climate, transparency
and water. In terms of the land aspect ranking being low, the land is used by by people to grow
crops and they will sell it to make money for their families and these lands are being taken by
companies, government and suppliers. ABF can improve this by having policies for who they can
make abide by the policies such as the suppliers and people within their companies, whereas if they
disobey the policies there will be consequences and in terms of the government taking the land ABF
