----------------- Class Question -----------------

Apply the Ecological Theory to a map of Pretoria.

○ The ecological theory cannot be applied to Pretoria for the following reasons:
- The history of Chicago and the history of Pretoria are vastly different.
 History of apartheid greatly impacts the way in which our cities were structured.
 Post-apartheid – the city zones have shifted and adapted once again.
- The concentric zone model does not adequately reflect the growth of Pretoria.
 Zone 1 – the CBD is very heavily populated, because housing is much less expensive.
→ Not the case everywhere – locations such as Sandton (Joburg CBD) is very expensive.
 Zone 2 – the location of factories do not follow the conventional pattern, and buildings that
would have been abandoned otherwise are used as squatting locations.
 Zone 3, 4, and 5 – Blend together on the map of Pretoria.
→ Housing near shopping centres, schools, and highways, to the east of Pretoria, tend to be
more expensive.
→ Pretoria North, and West are less expensive areas.
 Our services are too decentralized!
