M1 - Explain why human resources planning is important to an organisation
Kojar Ahmed

The ability to make and follow a plan is key to the success of a lot of businesses, this also extends to
non-profit or government organisations like schools and colleges. In this report I will be talking about
human resources and how integral human resource planning is to an organisation like The Cheadle
College, I will also touch on aspects that human resources has to consider in the business such as the
number of students, costs, investments, staff and subjects.

Most employers or businesses will generally want to move forward and expand rather than remain in
their current position. Although it is not done for the same reason or because of success in the
market, an organisation like The Cheadle College will also want to move forward and choose an
appropriate direction that they want to pursue, this is largely the responsibility of human resources
to decide whether they think it would be appropriate or even possible to expand. This relates to The
Cheadle College because human resources will have to take into consideration all the factors before
they make a big decision such as changing from a sixth form to a college that also takes in uni
students etc. This is an important decision as it affects students, teacher and other staff.

Costs have always been a big factor for all businesses big or small. Ultimately, it will either be up to
the human resources or finance department to decide what costs should be cut or whether they
should make a big financial investment that may or may not benefit them in the future. The type of
costs that an organisation like The Cheadle College may have to consider include renovations,
building improvements and the purchase of equipment. For example, The College may want to
improve a room structurally or they may want to add more computers. It will be up to human
resources to plan for this and decide whether the investment would be worth it. Effective planning
will prevent any miscommunication and should ensure that teachers and staff can still perform their
job.

The Cheadle College will be heavily impacted if there is a sudden shortage of students applying for
courses, this may lead to a lack of funding from the government and may end up in the closure of the
college. If the college were ever to go through anything like this then it may act as an incentive for
them to advertise places, or even offer unconditional places when desperate. The college may also
have difficulty in finding students that want to study a specific course, or they may find that more
students are applying for BTEC courses than A levels. It will be up to human resources to decide
whether they should discontinue courses and implement more BTEC ones. This is a human resources
issue because discontinuing A level courses is a huge decision that can have an impact on both
students and staff. Teachers who are specialised in A levels may be faced with redundancy or
uncertainty if this decision was made. It is also highly likely that the removal of A levels from the
curriculum will affect the number of students applying for the college.

When it comes to job security, most if not all staff and employees will say that it is a huge factor in
their employment, most will find it difficult to perform their job if they are faced with redundancy.
This then leads to other consequences like lower employee morale and decreased work results. The
Cheadle College will be in a similar boat as employees will find it difficult to teach their students and
are more prone to mistakes in their work. Redundancy can come from many factors, either from lack
of funding or lack of necessity. The Cheadle College at the current moment does not offer any
modern language courses, this may have been that they were unpopular or they were unable to hire
or maintain the staff to teach these subjects. This should be considered by human resources because
