TMS3729: TEACHING PHYSICAL SCIENCE IN FET PHASE: ASSIGNMENT 03

NAME: Sherwin Naidoo

STUDENT NUMBER: 11977051

UNIQUE ASSIGNMENT NUMBER: 880397

QUESTION 1:

1.1 Assessment refers to the act of acquiring and analysing proof of a student's growth and learning
is referred to as assessment. It is methodically gathering data and information about students'
knowledge, skills, and comprehension in order to make educated assessments of their
accomplishments and offer feedback for growth.

1.2

 Monitoring student progress.
 Providing guidance for lesson planning.
 Tracking student development.
 Finding areas of learning need.
 Supporting goal-setting and self-reflection.

1.3. Physical Sciences teachers can employ various methods to collect assessment evidence. Here
are two common ways:

 Practical Tests and Laboratory Work: Instructors of physical sciences can design real tests
and laboratory assignments as evaluation tasks. Students can conduct practical experiments,
record observations, gather data, analyse findings, and draw conclusions. This enables
teachers to assess students' practical skills, grasp of exploratory techniques, ability to apply
logical principles and capacity for data investigation. Coordinated testing-related
observation of students' performance, laboratory report analysis, research information
analysis, and student-provided conclusions and explanations evaluation evidence can all be
gathered.
 Written Evaluations: Physical science frequently employs written evaluations as a means of
gathering evaluation data. Tests, quizzes, and assignments are just a few examples of the
various constructed assessments that instructors can create. These evaluations could include
short answers, problem-solving activities, expositions, and descriptions of concepts in
addition to multiple-choice questions. Written assessments give students an opportunity to
show that they understand logical concepts, theories, and standards and that they are able
to apply them to a range of contexts. Teachers can evaluate their students' thoughtful
responses, examine their reasoning, measure their knowledge and comprehension, and
provide feedback based on the assessment results.

, 1.4. The phrase "The formative assessment process involves both the teacher AND the learner,
answering the following questions regarding student learning: Where am I going? Where am I now?
How do I get from here to there?" captures the essence of formative assessment and its significance
in the teaching of Physical Sciences for grade 10.

Formative assessment is an on-going and interactive process that engages both the teacher and the
learner in assessing progress and guiding further learning. It goes beyond simply assigning grades or
evaluating performance; it aims to enhance student understanding and support their growth
throughout the learning journey.

The first question, "Where am I going?" pertains to establishing clear learning goals and objectives
for the students. It is crucial for you as a teacher of physical sciences to state and explain these
objectives to the pupils. Students are given a sense of direction and meaning in their studies by
being given a clear picture of the desired learning goals. They understand what knowledge, skills,
and understanding they are expected to acquire.

Students answer the second question, "Where am I now?" by reflecting on their level of knowledge
and proficiency at the moment. Students must actively participate in evaluating their own learning,
determining their areas of strength and those that need improvement. Self-evaluation checklists,
rubrics, or reflection prompts are just a few tools that might help with this self-reflection. Students
can improve their metacognitive abilities, become more aware of their strengths and flaws, and take
charge of their own learning by being encouraged to analyse their own work critically.

"How do I get from here to there?" is the last question and it focuses on the methods and steps
required to close the gap between present knowledge and desired learning objectives. The teacher's
role is critical in this situation. As a Physical Sciences teacher, I would provide targeted feedback,
guidance, and instructional support to help students progress towards their learning goals. This
could involve providing specific suggestions for improvement, offering additional resources or
examples, and designing learning activities that address identified areas of weakness.

Incorporating formative assessment practices in teaching Physical Sciences for grade 10 entails a
continuous cycle of feedback, reflection, and adjustment. Students take an active role in their own
learning when the teacher and learner are both involved in the process. They are better able to
assess their progress, set goals that are doable, and create plans of action to achieve those goals.
Formative assessment directs my instructional choices as a teacher, enabling me to modify my
teaching strategies and interventions to fit the unique requirements of each student. Ultimately, it
fosters a collaborative and supportive learning environment, where students are empowered to take
ownership of their learning and strive for continuous improvement in their understanding of Physical
Sciences.

QUESTION 2:

2.1. Content Expert: The teacher possesses in-depth knowledge of the Physical Sciences curriculum,
including scientific concepts, principles, and theories.
