How to Structure Answers (1, 4, 6, 10 Markers)

TIP: You can use the marks alongside the question to know
how many minutes you should be spending on it.

➔ Unit 1 is based on one case study all throughout the
paper.

ESTIMATION!
➢ The first section of unit 1 has: 2 [1 markers] , 3 [4 markers]
, 1 [6 marker] and 1 [10 marker] and is about PIES
➢ The second section has: 1 [2 marker] , 2 [4 markers] and 2
[10 markers] and is about factors that affect
development
➢ The third section has: 1 [4 marker] , 1 [6 marker] and 2 [10
markers] and is about the effects of ageing

Try to add references to theories and mention theorists when
answering 4, 6 and 10 mark questions. (Think Piaget, Bandura,
Bowlby, Gesell, Chomsky, Rahe-Holmes)

Mention PIES (Physical, intellectual/cognitive, environmental,
social) factors where possible.

There are 3 sections in this exam, each section is worth 30
marks, there are a total of 90 marks for this paper.

One mark questions simply need correct identification with
any appropriate wording.

Four mark questions need two separate points, each having
their own appropriate expansion.

For example question 1(b) (4 marks) asked learners to describe
one predictable and unpredictable life event. Simply writing
‘death’ as an answer for an unpredictable life event received
zero marks as the appropriate expansion for that would be

, ‘at a young age’ as it signifies that the event could not be
accurately prepared for.

My response:

Describe one unpredictable and unpredictable life event. (4
marks)

Predictable

One predictable life event would be marriage as it is generally a
life event that people spend specifically allocated time making
plans and preparations for beforehand.

Unpredictable

One unpredictable life event would be death at a young age due
to an accident such as a car crash rather than a prior known
illness. This is unpredictable because it could not have been
foreseen.

Examples of 4 mark appropriate expansions:

1(c) Laura shares a flat with three other students at university.

They share all the bills and responsibilities associated with living
independently.

Describe how living away from home will have an impact on
Laura’s independence. (4 marks)

As Laura will be living away from home, she will need to develop
financial literacy (1 mark) since she will have to pay her own bills (1
mark).

Laura will also have to develop time management skills (1 mark)
since she will have to meet her university assignment and essay
deadlines (1 mark).
