De opbouw van de aarde4,5 miljard jaar geleden ontstond de aarde
samen met de andere planeten van ons
zonnestelsel: een grote klodder roodgloeiend
gesteente in een baan om de zon.
Seismologen: aardbevingen deskundige
Kern: vast gesteente.
Mantel: om de kern heen - traag stromend
gesteente. Aan de buitenkant een harde korst.
In de kern loopt de temperatuur op tot ruim 5000°C. De hoge druk in de aardkorst komt door het
gewicht van het gesteente dat erboven ligt.
Twee soorten aardkorst
Oceaanbodem/korst: 8km dik - vrij zware gesteente basalt.
Continenten: 40/80 km dik - licht gesteente zoals graniet.
Oceaanbodem en continenten ‘drijven’ beiden op het
mantelgesteente.
Onderwatergebergten/mid-oceanische ruggen: bergen

De aardkost is verdeeld in platen -> aardkorst platen: Delen van de aardkorst die als geheel
bewegen ten opzichte van andere aardkorst platen.
Bewegingen bij contact tussen aardplaten:
- A: Convergente beweging: twee platen bewegen naar elkaar toe
- A1 Een continentale plaat (graniet) schuift over een oceanische plaat (basalt)
- A2 Als twee continentale platen bewegen naar elkaar toe
- B: Divergente beweging: twee platen bewegen uit elkaar
- C: Transforme beweging: twee aardkorst platen bewegen langs elkaar, in tegengestelde richting
