Accident/Error/Injury Prevention - (1)
● Medical and Surgical Asepsis: Planning Care for a Client Who Has a Latex Allergy (Active
Learning Template - Basic Concept, RM Fund 10.0 Chp 10 Medical and Surgical Asepsis)
○ If the client or any member of the team has a latex allergy, the team must use latex-free
gloves, equipment, and supplies.
○ Most facilities use non-latex (nitrile) gloves. However, it's the health care team’s
responsibility to identify latex allergies and use items that are latex-free.
○ With a straight catheter, use silicone or teflon products for clients who have latex
allergies.
Safe Use of Equipment - (1)
● Home Safety: Teaching About Home Care of Oxygen Equipment (Active Learning Template -
Basic Concept, RM Fund 10.0 Chp 13 Home Safety)
○ Review oxygen safety measures. Because oxygen can cause materials t(combust more
easily and burn more rapidly, the client and family must be provided with information
on use of the oxygen delivery equipment and the dangers of combustion. Include the
following information in the teaching plan:
○ Use and store oxygen equipment according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
Place a "No Smoking" sign in a conspicuous place near the home A sign can also be
placed on the door to the client's bedroom.
○ Inform the client and family of the danger of smoking in the presence of oxygen. Family
members and visitors who smoken should do so outside the home.
Standard Precautions/Transmission-Based Precautions/Surgical Asepsis - (2)
● Infection Control: Caring for a Client Who Is Immunocompromised (Active Learning Template -
Basic Concept, RM Fund 10.0 Chp 11 Infection Control)
○ Inadequate hand hygiene (client and caregivers).
○ Individuals who have compromised health or defenses against infection, which include:
those who are immunocompromised, who had surgery and indwelling devices.
○ Caregivers using medical or surgical asepsis that does not follow the established
standards.
