NURSING NOTES
renal system overview urinary system overview
The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs in the renal system. They urine composition -
help the body pass waste as urine. They also help filter blood
96% water
before sending it back to the heart.
2% urea
The kidneys perform many crucial functions,
2% uric acid , creatine ,ammonia, sodium, potassium, chloride,
including:
phosphate, sulphate ,oxalate
Maintaining overall fluid balances
Regulating and filtering minerals from the blood
medications, and toxic substances ,medications and toxic
substances
creating hormones - that help produce bone health , blood bladder -
pressure , red blood cells (erythropoietin)
held in place by ligaments attached to pelvic bones
two ureters - bladder walls relax and expand to store urine and constrict to
empty
narrow tubes
urethra -
carry urine from kidney to bladder
allows urine to pass outside the body
backflow in the tubes is the cause of kidney infections.
brain signals tighten the bladder and relax sphincter
two sphincter muscles-
keep urine from leaking
close tightly like a rubber band
nerves in the bladder -
the nerves alert when it is time to urinate
