The famous saying by Winston Churchill “if you fail to plan, then you plan to fail” (Treiger, 2016) can be directly applied to someone’s career. A professional development plan can provide a visual outline and help to identify current and future needs, resources needed, and to help ensure goals are always met. Relative to the authors current nursing care and the development of the nursing process, goals are established, and later, “care” or in this case, goal achievement is evaluated. According to Perry (2017), in order for goals to be valuable they should be designed with the acronym SMART in mind. The letter S stands for specific goals, one that is clear- what does it look like and how will the author get there? For example, the author is a graduate student whose goal is to complete a master’s in nursing degree and obtain an Advanced Practice Nurse license after sitting for board exams.
