Introduction
This report explains organisational structures and their purpose in two different
organisations; Save the Children and Sainsbury’s. Pictorial evidence of both will be provided
to help further understand their structure and functional areas, as well as how they make
their strategic plans. Lastly, the report will look at how these two businesses use those
strategic plans in order to meet the purpose of their organisation.

Purpose of an organisational structure
Organisational structure refers to the established lines of control and the way responsibilities
are divided within a business. Every organisation needs one so that employees can clearly
understand their roles and what is expected of them, allowing them to carry out all of their
duties to the best of their capabilities.
Lines of control refer to the chain of command put in place to control decisions and activities,
in order to avoid conflict and contradictions within the organisation. An organisational
structure also shows how communication will take place, by outlining who reports to or
communicates with whom.
