Identifying a Local Health Care Economic Issue
The healthcare industry is affected by varieties of issues among them being health care
economic issues. These are issues associated with economic factors, which are affecting
provision of health care. Examples of these issues include aspects of supply and demand, access
to health care, food insecurity, social determinants of health, homelessness and inadequate
staffing among others. In this paper, inadequate staffing and as health care economic issue is
discussed.
Description of the Health Care economic Issue
Inadequate staffing is a serious and common economic issue affecting health care within
the community. This is especially among the nurses in the healthcare facilities. Inadequate
nursing staffing has resulted in shortage of nursing in the health care facilities. This can be
described as a situation where the ratio between patients to nurses is very high. In other words,
the nurses are not adequate to provide quality care to the patient seeking medical or health care.
This healthcare economic issue has significant impact on the nursing population. The nurses
experience burnout, increased errors in practice and dissatisfaction among others (Haddad et al.,
2022). This translates to reduced quality of care the nurses give to patients. In other words, the
nurses become less effective in practice. Additionally, inadequate staffing has negative impacts
on nursing turnover. This takes place in the case where the nurses leave their nursing jobs at a
facility of the profession (Bae, 2022). This increases with inadequate staffing of nurses.
Rationale for selecting the Issue
This economic issue is selected because of its significance in healthcare. First, the rate of
inadequate staffing in the facilities is significantly high and growing because of different factors
such as aging population and workforce and negative working environment among other factors.
