Why do risk assessments need to be carried out?
a risk assessment is the assessment of the usage of a substance and the practice of
how the substance is used in a safe way. Risk assessments need to be carried out to
comply health and safety as preforming a risk assessment prevents accidents from
happening in the work place as well as being a way to show that the site was safe if
there was to be an accident, a risk assessment can also highlight any dangers that are
in the work place which could possibly wither get the company shut down and fined
or could cause an accident.
Why should the health and safety act be followed?
The Health and Safety act this is followed today is the ‘Health and Safety at work act
1974’ both the HSE and the local authorities are responsible for making sure that this
act and corresponding legislations are followed. Making sure that employers,
employees, as well as any visitors to the workplace follow this act reduces the risk of
serious accidents and it gives a guideline for the people who are unfamiliar with the
work place on how to protect themselves and others around them.
Why do we need COSHH?
COSHH stands for ‘the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health’ this is another
thing that when followed significantly reduces the risks or any possible harm to
health or possible harm to a person’s safety. Every year, thousands of workers are
made ill by hazardous substance. By following the COSHH Regulations, a company
can save money and be more effective by not having to replace trained workers, they
can also improve production and can cut waste.
Case study.
In this case study, there was no COSHH assessment that needed to be carried out as
normally farmers and farm hands do not work with hazardous materials. This case
study highlights the importance of both risk assessments and Health & Safety this
accident could have been easily prevented with a risk assessment and by following
the mentioned Health and Safety acts:
A young person working on a farm moving hay in the barn was run over by a
forklift truck that was being driven by an untrained and unauthorised person.
He was riding on the side of the truck when he fell off and the truck ran over
his leg, breaking it in the process. The young person was not properly
supervised nor was a risk assessment carried out. The farming company that
he worked for, was prosecuted for not following the Health & Safety at Work
