Chapter 1 and 2 - Summary (pp. 5-12)

Thirteen-year-old Martin Retief (Hoender) lives with his mother, her sister Cindy, and his uncle
Hendrik on a plot (small holdings). His father died almost three years ago in a car accident and
his mother is still traumatized by the fact that she never slept in their bedroom again or left the
house. Cindy's boyfriend, Bruce, brings her home later than the time told, at ten o'clock and it
causes further stress for his mother. Uncle Hendrik, who is very quiet, lives in an outside room.
Martin, who took over his late father's chicken farm, one morning finds his proud hen, Klarabel,
dead. The new neighbor’s dog bit the hen to death. Martin goes to confront the boy next door,
Drikus who, with a shaved head and a video camera in the hand greeted Drikus and said that he
knows that Hoender's mother used to be an actress. Drikus has a magazine article with a photo of
Hoender 's mother. He grinningly tells Hoender that the magazine offers a reward of R500 for
the person who can help them to trace the stars of way back then. And then Hoender gives
Drikus a bloody nose when he hits him.

in ’n buitekamertjie.
