Unit 4

M2: Discuss two major theories of ageing in
relation to the development of the individual.

In this assessment, I am going to discuss the two theories of ageing which are;
disengagement theory and activity theory. My individual is Angelina Jolie and she’s 41 years
old.
Disengagement Theory
The disengagement theory of aging claims that it is natural and acceptable for older adults
to withdraw from society and personal relationships as they age. Further on, the theory
suggests that people will start to isolate themselves the older they get, it is seen as normal
and natural to withdraw from society bit by bit. This theory was developed by Cumming and
Henry in 1961 and it is the first theory of aging that social scientists had created.
In my opinion, as Angelina Jolie gets older and become elderly she will start to disengage
and isolate herself from interactions e.g. she will stop socialising with people and stop
attending to event or award ceremonies. Angeline Jolie has a lot of success in her adulthood
life stage e.g. successful career, making good amount of money, living luxury life, healthy
family, loved and respected from majority of people and etc. Although, she always tends to
keep her personal life, family and friends off public-eye and never showed her luxurious
lifestyle instead tends to help others all around the word with her abilities. Always keeping
her private lifestyle quiet, suggest she already has slightly disengage from the society and as
she ages over the years, she will disengage and isolate herself more from the society
because she has started to isolate and disengage herself from a young age before getting
old. Another example, of Angelina Jolie isolating and disengages herself from society by not
having social media. Social media is very important in the society nowadays due to all
thoughts, ideas and feelings is expressed on social media and it is used for communicating
with people all around the world. Not using social media, not attending TV programmes,
doesn’t do interviews and etc. This suggests, Angelina Jolie choses her personal space
before the society. Although, this is seen as isolating and disengages by the society.
Activity Theory

Activity theory suggests that as people get older they should and need to stay mentally and
socially active in order to limit the risks associated with disengagement. This theory was
developed by Robert Havighurst in 1961. Further on, this theory suggests if people start
activities, remain active and socialise with others while ageing they will tend to be happier,
healthier, have better self-esteem, better confident, are more comfortable when socialising
with others, prevent loneliness and tend to enjoy the time of ageing.
